To install FiveM you need a legitimate, fully updated copy of GTA V on Windows, the Rockstar Games Launcher signed in, and the installer from fivem.net - the only official source. The 2026 catch: there are now two clients, FiveM Legacy for GTA V Legacy and FiveM for GTAV Enhanced, in early access since July 21, 2026. Here is how to install FiveM end to end, plus the errors that actually stop people.

What you need before you install FiveM

FiveM sits on top of a real GTA V installation. The docs require a fully updated copy and state that FiveM "will not work with illegitimate versions of GTAV". Cfx links Steam, the Epic Games Store, the Rockstar Warehouse, Amazon and the Xbox Store as places to buy it, and its troubleshooting guidance recognises those launchers' default install paths.

  • A legitimate, fully updated copy of GTA V matching the client you install.
  • Windows: fully updated 8.1, 10 or 11 for Legacy; build 1909 or above for Enhanced.
  • The Rockstar Games Launcher installed and signed in - documented for the Enhanced installer, and sensible for Legacy too.
  • A Cfx account for the sign-in step on first launch.
  • Free disk space for the FiveM cache on top of the game itself.
  • PC only: Cfx has no plans to support the client on Linux or consoles.

Which FiveM download do you need?

Open fivem.net and you get two downloads: the standard FiveM client for GTA V Legacy, and "DOWNLOAD FIVEM FOR GTAV ENHANCED", flagged "Currently In Early-Access". Install the one matching the edition you own. Pages still ranking for this query predate July 2026 and call Enhanced unsupported; that changed on July 21, 2026.

Enhanced is in early access, so expect bugs, missing features and no graphics mods for now. Cfx's Legacy vs Enhanced docs cover what differs.

Graphics modsCertain plugins via the plugins folder; servers may disallow themNot usable during early access; pure mode always on

Budget for the higher storage figure and leave room for the FiveM cache on top of the game: the docs system requirements and the fivem.net panel do not match each other.

Where to download FiveM, and why the source matters

One source: fivem.net. Pick the download for your edition and accept the licence prompt. Legacy gives you a single FiveM.exe; Enhanced gives you a full installer. Both come from Cfx-controlled domains, and there is no second official channel.

That last point is the security lesson, and it is my view rather than a Cfx statement. Any site offering a free FiveM download, a repacked client, or a cracked GTA V bundle is offering something Cfx does not publish. Naming those sites only advertises them. If the domain is not fivem.net, close the tab. One honest reason people hunt for mirrors: antivirus sometimes eats the real client. Cfx's fix is to install FiveM, leave it closed, and add it to the exceptions list in your antivirus software before launching.

How to install FiveM step by step

  • Step 1. Install and fully update GTA V, then sign in to the Rockstar Games Launcher.
  • Step 2. Download the client for your edition from fivem.net.
  • Step 3. Run FiveM.exe. Per the docs: "If you run the installer in an empty folder, FiveM will install there. Otherwise, it will install in %localappdata%\FiveM."
  • Step 4. When prompted, browse to your GTA V folder and select GTA5.exe.
  • Step 5. Accept the local game data update; it can run for several minutes.
  • Step 6. Accept the Terms of Service, then sign in with your Cfx account. The docs say "Don't skip this!" - authorize in the browser, then Continue.
  • Step 7. Launch from the Start menu shortcut afterwards, not the downloaded FiveM.exe.

The Enhanced installer works differently: it lets you choose a separate folder or drive for cached server files, offers shortcuts, and supports repair and uninstall. Cfx's steps are open the installer, select Install, accept the Terms of Service.

Where FiveM installs its data, and why that matters

FiveM does not land in Program Files and does not touch your GTA V folder. By default it installs to %localappdata%\FiveM, restated in the Cfx platform FAQ as C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\FiveM. Inside sits FiveM.app, holding the application data folder, the cache, and CitizenFX.ini, which records your game path.

That folder is where your free space goes. Cfx's development update says every resource file downloaded from any Legacy server stayed on disk forever, which "could quietly eat up gigabytes of storage with no easy way to reclaim the space". Plan well above the 4GB to 8GB cache allowance if you server-hop. Enhanced now clears files servers no longer serve.

First launch: game validation, Rockstar sign-in, and your Cfx account

The first launch runs in a fixed order. FiveM asks you to point it at GTA5.exe, then reports that local game data needs updating; say yes and let it finish. Terms of Service appear, then a window to sign in with your Cfx account. Your browser opens, you click Authorize, and you return to a welcome message. If that prompt never appears, use Link Account at the top of the client.

Validation happens somewhere in there. Cfx states that FiveM contacts Rockstar Games Online Services only to validate your game copy on first launch, that the check cannot be detected by Rockstar, and that "FiveM doesn't modify your GTAV installation, so you can switch between GTA Online and FiveM without getting banned." Separately, the license identifiers servers use to recognise players began changing on June 24, 2026; you can set your default identity in the client until June 24, 2027.

FiveM not installing or not launching? The errors people actually hit

Every row below comes from Cfx's client issues manual or support articles. I left out anything I could not source, plus two fixes the internet loves that Cfx endorses nowhere: running FiveM as administrator, and switching antivirus off.

Full lists live at the docs client issues page and the Cfx common errors section. On that last row Cfx is explicit: "Note: This action does not mean that you have been banned." If a server banned you instead, that is its own anti-cheat and appeals process - see false positives and fair appeals.

How to join a FiveM server once it is installed

Open the client and select Browse Servers; Cfx also publishes the list at servers.fivem.net. The FILTER dropdown covers Capacity, Server Access, Languages and Tags, and sorting by upvote power, name or players guarantees nothing about quality, as Cfx itself notes.

  • Server browser: pick a server, read its description, player count and access requirements, then select Connect.
  • Direct connect: press F8 for the client console and use the documented connect command, for example connect 127.0.0.1:30120.
  • Join links: a cfx.re/join address works with the same command, as in connect cfx.re/join/y4lg95, the Cfx test server.

A padlock next to a server name means it is allowlisted: an application to fill in, or a Discord to join, before you can play. Cfx describes it plainly: "You'll now see a padlock icon next to names in the server list when the server requires you complete an allowlist process before you can play." Skim the rules and onboarding notes first. For the console itself, see our FiveM console commands reference.

Do I need FiveM installed to host a server?

Not for the server itself - hosting runs on separate server binaries. You still want the client installed to test what you build, so if you landed here planning to host, the client install is step zero. The rest of the job is its own: a free license key from the Cfx Portal, a config, and a machine that stays online. Our practical version is FiveM server setup and hardening. The integrity check Cfx runs protects the game process locally; your server needs protection of its own, which is what we build FairShieldAC for - real-time cheat detection, a global HWID ban network, and Gravity DDoS protection upstream.

FiveM install FAQ

Can FiveM get me banned from GTA Online?

No. Cfx states that "FiveM doesn't modify your GTAV installation, so you can switch between GTA Online and FiveM without getting banned", and that the client contacts Rockstar services only to validate that you own the game, once, on first launch. What you can lose is access to a FiveM server if you cheat there.

Is FiveM free, and do I still need to own GTA V?

FiveM is free to download from fivem.net, and it does not replace the game. You need a legitimate, fully updated copy of GTA V, Legacy or Enhanced. Cfx links Steam, the Epic Games Store, the Rockstar Warehouse, Amazon and the Xbox Store, and states that FiveM "will not work with illegitimate versions of GTAV".

Why does FiveM uninstall itself right after I install it?

Commonly, antivirus. Cfx's documented cause is antivirus software identifying the client as malicious and removing it; the fix is to install FiveM, leave it closed, add it to your antivirus exceptions, then launch. If it keeps interfering, Cfx asks for a support ticket rather than disabled protection.

Does FiveM work on Mac, Linux, or console?

No. Cfx has no plans to support the client on Linux or consoles, because FiveM uses interoperability mechanisms only available on PC. Servers are the exception: Cfx confirms FiveM servers can be run on Linux.

What to do after FiveM finishes installing

If the install worked, launch from the Start menu, hit the Cfx test server once to confirm a clean connection, then start browsing. If it did not, work down the table from the exact error string. If you are installing the client to open a server, read what a FiveM anti-cheat is and how detection works, then the setup and hardening checklist, then how to vet a script before installing it. Our plans sit on the homepage, and every dated change is on the changelog.
