FiveM Enhanced vs Legacy: What Actually Changes
FiveM Enhanced is Cfx.re's build of FiveM for GTA V Enhanced. What it changes for players and server owners, which build to run, and what is still unclear.

FiveM Enhanced - officially FiveM for GTAV Enhanced - is a separate FiveM client and server stack for Rockstar's GTA V Enhanced edition; the difference versus FiveM Legacy is that it runs alongside Legacy rather than replacing it, on a different game edition, a different client, and a client-server sync model. As of 2026-08-26 it is in early access, one server runs one version, and Cfx has said server upgrades will not be mandatory.
FiveM Enhanced status as of 2026-08-26
Every claim below is dated and linked to an official Cfx page. Here is where things stood on 2026-08-26.
- Early access opened on 21 July 2026. Cfx calls it an early access version of the framework that will contain bugs and missing features.
- No full public launch date has been announced.
- No end date for FiveM Legacy has ever been published. The February 2025 announcement still stands: support for the legacy version of GTAV will continue.
- Asset Escrow is listed as not implemented yet on the official What's Changed page.
- Cfx has run public stress tests. The stress test calendar posted 12 August 2026 lists sessions on 14 August and 4 September to test server performance at scale. No results had appeared by 2026-08-26.
What FiveM Enhanced is, and how it differs from the Legacy build
Rockstar shipped an upgraded edition of GTA V, and Cfx built a version of FiveM that runs on it. The word Enhanced names both, which is where confusion starts. Underneath, this is bigger than a graphics refresh. The official changes page says Enhanced 'no longer uses P2P synchronization and has instead switched to a client-server model'. OneSync big mode is now the only mode, Mono was replaced by .NET, Mumble is deprecated, and switches such as sv_netHttp2 and the old +set moo 31337 devmode trick are gone.
| Area | FiveM Legacy | FiveM for GTAV Enhanced |
|---|---|---|
| Game edition required | GTA V Legacy | GTA V Enhanced |
| Client | The existing FiveM client | A separate client launcher |
| Sync model | P2P synchronization available | Client-server model, P2P removed |
| OneSync | Big mode and non-big mode | Big mode only |
| C# runtime | Mono | .NET (docs list a .NET 10 SDK requirement) |
| Pure mode | Configurable via sv_pureLevel, two levels | Always enabled, cannot be turned off |
| Voice | Mumble | Mumble deprecated in favour of a new voice system |
| Asset Escrow | Available | Documented as not implemented yet |
| Game build selection | Historical builds by number or alias | Latest build, or sv_enforceGameBuild 1 for base game |
Do I need FiveM Enhanced to play on a FiveM server?
If your servers are still on Legacy, do nothing. To join an Enhanced server you need GTA V Enhanced plus the separate FiveM client for it - Cfx confirmed access would be via a separate client launcher, while GTAV Legacy will continue to be supported within the current FiveM client. The February 2025 announcement rules out cross-play between versions and running both on one server.
On Enhanced, 'Pure mode is now always enabled and can no longer be turned off. While FiveM for GTAV Enhanced is in early access, graphic mods cannot be used.' On Legacy that is owner-configurable. If you run client-side graphics mods, that alone is a reason to stay on Legacy.
What FiveM Enhanced means for a server owner
You are picking a side. One server runs one version, and that drives everything else: your players have to follow you, your assets have to convert, your tooling has to work on a changed connection path. Cfx said in its February 2025 announcement that 'once released, server upgrades will not be mandatory', so pressure to move is competitive rather than enforced. Cfx's onboarding guide is three steps: server files, Alchemist conversion, then reading what changed.
- Escrowed paid assets. Escrow is not implemented on Enhanced yet and Cfx gave no date. A stack leaning on encrypted paid resources is waiting on Cfx.
- Conversion effort. 3D assets need converting, and someone has to check the output.
- Where your players are. With no cross-play, a migration moves the whole community at once.
- Config review. Removed convars, changed defaults and an Enhanced-only lockdown mode mean reading server.cfg line by line.
- Protection compatibility. The handshake changed. Ask every vendor what they have verified before you cut over.
How sv_enforceGameBuild behaves on FiveM Enhanced
The base definition is unchanged: sv_enforceGameBuild 'selects a game build for clients to use', and it is a startup-only setting. On Legacy you pick from a long list of historical builds; on Enhanced, as of 2026-08-26, the docs say only the latest gamebuild (The Kortz Center Heist) is supported, with one alternative: 'If you wish to load the base game without any DLCs you can do so by setting sv_enforceGameBuild 1 in the server.cfg.'
Pinning an older numeric build out of Legacy habit therefore asks for something the current docs do not list as supported. We are not printing a build number here, because we could not verify one on docs.fivem.net.
Enhanced-only and Enhanced-different server settings
The Cfx server commands reference has a section headed 'Console commands exclusive to FiveM for GTAV Enhanced', and the changes page lists new and deprecated variables. Full tables live in our FiveM console commands reference; below is the consequence of each.
- sv_devMode - Enhanced-only. Docs: 'automatically enables dev mode for joining clients and limits max clients to 8', default false, not for production. It will not be in your Legacy config, so the risk is a test setting left behind.
- sv_entityLockdown full - Enhanced-only: 'disables dummy object creation. Only usable on FiveM for GTAV Enhanced.' The default is still inactive, so choose it deliberately.
- sv_protectServerEntities - 'Not implemented. Use sv_entityLockdown instead.' In an Enhanced config it does nothing.
- sv_syncTickRate - new, default 60, range 1-120. sv_useAccurateSends is deprecated in favour of setting it explicitly.
- Pure mode - sv_pureLevel offers two levels on Legacy. On Enhanced it is always on.
Do your resources, mods and streamed assets carry over?
Scripts carry over. Assets do not, automatically. Cfx stated in its March 2026 development update that 'the existing features and natives FiveM currently supports to create scripts in Lua, JavaScript, or C# will continue to work'. The caveat is C#, where Mono became .NET, so those resources need rebuilding.
3D assets need converting. Cfx ships Alchemist, 'a tool for players, server owners, and asset creators who want to convert assets originally made for GTAV Legacy (Gen8) to be compatible with GTAV Enhanced (Gen9)'. It handles YDR, YTD, YFT, YPT and YDD files, and requires Windows 11 per the docs.
On escrow, the Alchemist docs say 'if Alchemist GUI hits an escrowed asset it will fail and stop the process', while the CLI skips them and notes them in its report. Add Asset Escrow not being implemented and you have the real blocker: a stack built on paid encrypted resources cannot simply be converted. Licences still apply regardless of what the platform enforces.
What FiveM Enhanced changes about protecting your server
Cfx addressed this in Development Update #2 on 1 July 2026: 'existing protections used for FiveM servers will need to be adjusted to be compatible with' FiveM for GTAV Enhanced. The connection path changed - the handshake now runs over WebSocket, and UDP traffic does not begin until you are connected. Anything that inspects, rate-limits or filters connections needs re-testing, upstream mitigation included - see our DDoS incident guide and the Gravity DDoS write-up.
The bigger risk is behavioural. Migrations are when configs get loosened: a resource will not convert, so entity lockdown gets dropped; something needs debugging, so dev mode goes on; none of it gets reverted, because by then the server is finally up. Fix or replace the broken resource instead of weakening the server around it.
Disclosure: FairShieldAC is our own product - real-time cheat detection, a global ban network using HWID and cross-server bans, on-device deep scanning and Gravity DDoS protection, with a dated public changelog. Whichever vendor you use, ask what they have tested on Enhanced.
What is still unclear about FiveM Enhanced as of 2026-08-26
These are the questions we could not resolve against official Cfx sources on 2026-08-26.
- When Enhanced leaves early access. No date in any Cfx post we checked, including the announcements category.
- When Asset Escrow arrives. Coming in a later update, with no date.
- Whether graphics mods return afterwards. The docs tie the restriction to early access, then say pure mode can never be turned off. The two do not resolve each other.
- Whether more game builds become selectable. Current docs say latest-only plus sv_enforceGameBuild 1.
- Legacy's long-term future. Officially it continues, with no end date. Any shutdown date you see quoted is a guess.
- Stress test outcomes. No published results for 14 August; 4 September was still upcoming.
FiveM Enhanced FAQ
Does FiveM work on GTA V Enhanced?
Yes. Cfx released FiveM for GTAV Enhanced in early access on 21 July 2026, as a separate client with its own server files, describing it as an early access version that will contain bugs and missing features. No full launch date has been announced as of 2026-08-26.
Can a FiveM Legacy client join a FiveM Enhanced server?
Treat them as separate ecosystems. Cfx's February 2025 announcement rules out cross-play between server versions and running both versions on the same server, and Enhanced ships as a separate client launcher.
Do I have to move my FiveM server to Enhanced?
No. Cfx has stated that once released, server upgrades will not be mandatory, and as of 2026-08-26 no end-of-life or migration deadline for FiveM Legacy has been published anywhere official. Any article quoting a shutdown date is speculating.
Will my anti-cheat and DDoS protection still work on FiveM Enhanced?
Do not assume so. Cfx stated in Development Update #2 that existing protections used for FiveM servers will need to be adjusted for Enhanced, and the connect-time handshake now runs over WebSocket with UDP starting only once connected. Ask each vendor what they have verified, and when.
How should you plan a FiveM Legacy to Enhanced migration?
Staying on Legacy is defensible. If you are moving, build a parallel test server with txAdmin, read the official What's Changed page against your own server.cfg line by line, convert assets before anything touches production, re-vet any replacement scripts, and re-validate your protection stack against the hardening checklist.
